The Ultimate One-Cup Coffee and Espresso Maker: AeroPress
The AeroPress, by Aerobie is the ultimate one-cup coffee and espresso maker. I’ve been using mine for several months now and I love it. I have tossed out my drip coffee maker, my pod coffee maker and I barely use my French press anymore. The reason? The AeroPress is fast, simple, easy, and makes great tasting coffee and espresso.
My favorite drink is an Americano: a shot of espresso with hot water added. The AeroPress is the best device for making this drink. I heat up the water in my tea pot, use the AeroPress to make the espresso, and add the hot water from the tea pot. Done in about 20 seconds (not including the time it takes to heat up the water).
The best part is the taste. Following the instructions will yield the best flavor from whatever coffee beans you use. That’s because this is an espresso maker – not a drip coffee maker. The key to espresso is the pressure that forces the water through the coffee grinds. Another important factor is the water temperature. Don’t use boiling water. That makes the coffee bitter. The water should be about 175 degrees. I picked up this handy digital thermometer to make sure I get the water at just the right temperature. And of course, you’ll want some good coffee beans. When I can’t get some fancy special coffee from my local shop, I am partial to Starbucks Espresso Roast. It’s really good and comes out great with the AeroPress.
And, the AeroPress is portable. I brought my AeroPress on vacation this past summer, and it was a life saver. The house I stayed in had a drip machine, but I didn’t have to suffer that mediocre brew because I brought own trusty device.
At around $25 on Amazon, this is one of my favorite things I purchased this year. And definitely worth the price.
Here’s the description from Amazon.com’s page about how to use the AeroPress:
To brew a double espresso or 10-ounce cup of coffee:
- Place a microfilter in the bottom cap of the AeroPress chamber and twist the cap tightly closed.
- Place two scoops of ground coffee from the included AeroPress scoop into the chamber.
- Stand the chamber on a sturdy mug, then proceed to pour hot water into the top of the chamber (175 degrees F is optimal).
- Stir the water and coffee with the included paddle for about 10 seconds.
- Insert the plunger into the chamber and gently press down about a quarter of an inch and continue to maintain that pressure for 20 to 30 seconds (gentle pressure is the key to easy AeroPressing).
This will result in a double espresso. To make an Americano, simply top off the mug with hot water, or add hot milk for a creamy latte. The AeroPress can press from 1 to 4 scoops, and each scoop from the included AeroPress scoop makes the equivalent of a single espresso or 5 ounces of American coffee. Fill the chamber with hot water to the number corresponding to the number of scoops.
