The Best Organic Lip Balm – Only FOUR: Ingredients
Goodbye, ChapStick. So long, Blistex. I found the ultimate lip balm and I’m feeling really good about it. It’s called FOUR:.
I love this stuff because it works better than any other lip balm I’ve used. And believe me, I’ve used a lot. Just now, I went hunting through my coat pockets and found six different tubes – all from different brands. FOUR: lip balm is unique because it’s the perfect balance of not-too-soft and not-too-hard. It’s smooth, but not slimy, has a nice scent and taste, feels great on your lips, and lasts a long time.
Now, here are the cool parts: there are only four ingredients (coconut oil, beeswax, jojoba oil, and peppermint oil), they are all 100% organic, and the stuff is handmade in New York City. I also think the brand has a cool, simple aesthetic.
You can order a tube of FOUR: lip balm online for $6 or three tubes for $17. That may sound pricey compared with $3-4 for ChapStick, but remember, you’re paying a little more for a lot less. And by less, I mean less mysterious stuff in your lip balm.
For example, according to its website, the active ingredient in ChapStick (the original version) is White Petrolatum. (What is an active ingredient, anyway?) But it also has 19 other ingredients: arachidyl propionate, camphor, carnauba wax, cetyl alcohol, fragrance, isopropyl lanolate, isopropyl myristate, lanolin, light mineral oil, methylparaben, octyldodecanol, oleyl alcohol, paraffin, phenyl trimethicone, propylparaben, red 6 lake, titanium dioxide, white wax, and yellow 5 lake.
I don’t know if any of that stuff is bad. Hell, I don’t know what most of that stuff is. Some people think that “Big Lip Balm” adds some of these ingredients to create an addiction so you’ll keep on buying. I can’t peer into the souls of the makers of these products, so I won’t opine on that. But when it comes to putting stuff on or in my body, I think less is more. In this case FOUR: is greater than 20.
